Every parent sends their child to school trusting they will come home safe. Every teacher and staff member deserves to do their job without fear. Safety is the foundation everything else in a school is built on. When students and staff feel protected, they can focus on learning and teaching.

Real school safety is about more than one solution. It means secure buildings and grounds, well-trained adults on every campus, plans that work in an emergency, and attention to students' mental and emotional wellbeing. As your School Board trustee, I will work to close the security gaps in our schools and give every District 5 family peace of mind.

Here's how we achieve this together!

SECURE OUR BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

• Review security at every District 5 school to identify where the real gaps are, from entrances and fencing to playgrounds and pickup areas.

• Prioritize practical, real-world improvements that protect students whether they are inside the building or outside on the grounds.

• Work to secure the funding needed to close security gaps, and make sure that money is spent where students are most at risk.

• Report to families on what improvements have been made so parents can see progress, not just promises.

TRAIN EVERYONE ON OUR CAMPUSES

• Provide better safety training for teachers, staff, administrators, security personnel, and everyone else who works on our campuses.

• Make sure no one is left without the tools and knowledge they need to keep students safe in a difficult moment.

• Include substitute teachers and temporary staff in safety training so every adult on campus is prepared.

• Strengthen training on de-escalation and safe responses so situations are handled calmly and correctly.

 

BE READY FOR EMERGENCIES

• Make sure every school has clear, up-to-date emergency plans that staff and students actually know and have practiced.

• Coordinate with local first responders so schools and emergency services are on the same page before anything happens.

• Review how the district communicates with families during an emergency so parents get accurate information quickly.

• Check that safety plans reflect the real layout and needs of each individual school, not a one-size-fits-all template.

SUPPORT STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING

• Treat student mental health as part of school safety, not separate from it, because supported students are safer students.

• Support access to counselors and mental health resources so students who are struggling get help early.

• Strengthen efforts to prevent bullying and address conflicts before they grow into something more serious.

• Create clear, trusted ways for students and families to report concerns and know they will be taken seriously. As your trustee, listening will always be a priority. I will create more accessible ways for families to engage and share feedback and I commit to acting on what is learned.

KEEP THE BOARD ACCOUNTABLE FOR SAFETY

• Require regular and transparent reporting on school safety so the Board and the public can see where our schools stand.

• Set clear expectations for safety improvements and track whether the district is meeting them.

• Make sure safety funding is spent responsibly and delivers real protection for students and staff.

• Listen to teachers, staff, and families about the safety concerns they see every day.

Keeping our schools safe takes secure buildings, well-trained adults, plans that work when they are needed, and attention to every student's wellbeing. Our kids and staff deserve to feel protected every day, and every District 5 family deserves a School Board that treats their safety as its first responsibility.
